Reuse Your Waste

« Back to Purchasing and Waste

There are two different ways in which you can reuse an object, either for its original purpose or for a completely new purpose.

Reusing can save you replacing various objects which then saves you money and is good for the environment. You could give things that you don't have a use for any more to friends or family. Or you could fix devices that are broken - this is cheaper and uses fewer raw materials than buying a replacement. This can include fixing an iron or toaster, or refilling an ink cartridge or toner for a printer.

Here are some ideas of ways that you can reuse things at school, but also at home or work:

  • Paper
    • Paper can be used to make notes or shopping list on
    • Shredded paper can be used as bedding for small pets such as hamsters and rabbits
    • Packing materials such as tissue paper can be used to wrap gifts
    • Paper can be used in art projects such as collages and as paper maché
    • Envelopes for greetings cards can be saved for use with handmade cards if they are not written on
  • Glass Jars and Pots
    • These can be used to store homemade preserves which are cheaper and tastier than shop bought products
    • Jars can be used to store bits and pieces around the home
    • Can be used as plant pots for seedlings
  • Plastic and Paper Bags
    • These can be reused in bins around the home or when out shopping
  • Wood
    • Can be used in fires to keep your home warm in winter
    • Wood can also be used in Do-It-Yourself projects
  • Textiles
    • Old clothes can be ripped up and used for cleaning rags
    • Clothes can also be donated to charities, either for sale in the UK or for donation to the third world
